The amazing, not-to-be missed White Temple near Chiang Rai, Thailand...a life-project of Thai artist Ajarn Chalermchai Kositpipat. Begun in 1997, the artist expects completion to take 60-90 years. The 80 people who work with him to build it--architects, painters, designers--are being trained to continue the work after his death. The artist finds the funding himself, accepting no donations from "government officers, politicians, or millionaires" because he wants to be beholden to no one.

This Buddhist temple is white because, the artist says, "Lord Buddha represents purity." Small mirrors used throughout the complex are "a symbol of wisdom (Dharma) of the Lord Buddha that shines throughout the universe."
